YouTube has a wealth of video content available for consumption. Whether its humorous or educational, this footage is out there, and may be helpful to you in augmenting your lessons.

In this how-to, we're going to review how you can download YouTube video(s) so you can avoid the load times and having to switch to your web browser to view the video (and whatever ads, appropriate or not, that may be on that page).

  1. Determine the video you wish to use. For this tutorial, we'll use a recording of Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong performing "Umbrella Man".

  2. Copy the URL of the video, either from the address bar or from YouTube's menu.

  3. In your web browser, load either KeepVid or Vixy. These sites are designed to fetch YouTube content and deliver it to you as a movie file that can be either played using QuickTime, included in a PowerPoint or OpenOffice Impress presentation, or edited using iMovie.
  4. KeepVid Instructions
    1. Paste the URL copied in Step 2 into the field on the main page and click "DOWNLOAD".

    2. Click the MP4 (High Quality) link in the list of available download links
  5. Vixy Instructions
    1. Paste the URL copied in Step 2 into the field on the Vixy main page.
    2. Select the appropriate file type from the drop-down list. "MOV for Mac" is probably the best choice here.
    3. Click Start to begin the download.

  • Either of these services may have trouble with specific videos, so you may have to alternate between them depending on the content you wish to download. For example, the video used in this example did not have sound when downloaded via Vixy.
  • The file generated by either of these services may be sizable, depending on the length of the video.
